About the role

As a Database Architect, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and managing the organisation’s databases to ensure optimal performance, scalability, and reliability. Your role will involve working closely with stakeholders, such as software developers, data analysts, and system administrators, to understand their requirements and translate them into effective database solutions. You will also be responsible for maintaining data integrity, security, and privacy within the databases.

Key responsibilities

  • Database Design: Design and develop database architectures, including conceptual, logical, and physical models, to meet the organisation’s needs. Evaluate and select appropriate database technologies, considering factors such as performance, scalability, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Database Development: Create and modify database objects, such as tables, views, stored procedures, and triggers. Write efficient and optimised SQL queries and optimise database performance through indexing, query tuning, and database parameter configuration.
  • Data Integration: Design and implement strategies for data integration, data migration, and data synchronisation between various systems and databases. Ensure smooth data flow and integrity across different platforms and applications.
  • Data Security and Privacy: Implement robust security measures to protect sensitive data and ensure compliance with relevant regulations (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA). Define and enforce access controls, authentication mechanisms, and data encryption techniques.
  • Performance Optimisation: Monitor and analyse database performance metrics, identify bottlenecks, and implement performance tuning techniques. Conduct regular database capacity planning and scalability assessments.
  • Backup and Recovery: Develop and implement backup and recovery strategies to ensure data availability and minimise downtime. Perform regular backups, test recovery procedures, and maintain disaster recovery plans.
  • Data Governance: Establish and enforce data governance policies and procedures to maintain data quality, consistency, and standardisation across the organisation. Define and implement data management best practices.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including developers, system administrators, and data analysts, to understand their requirements and provide guidance on database-related matters. Effectively communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Documentation and Training: Create and maintain comprehensive documentation, including database schemas, data dictionaries, and technical specifications. Conduct training sessions to educate users and developers on database-related topics.

Key skills and qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field.
  • Proven work experience as a Database Architect or a similar role.
  • In-depth knowledge of database management systems (e.g., Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL) and related technologies.
  • Proficiency in database design principles, data modelling, and normalization techniques.
  • Strong SQL programming skills and experience with query optimization.
  • Familiarity with data integration and ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes.
  • Knowledge of database security principles and best practices.
  • Experience with performance monitoring and tuning tools.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
